The man convicted twice for child neglect that left a 3-year-old girl with brain damage has been sentenced to up to 15 years in prison.

Justin Carrigan was caring for the girl in September 2010 when he told witnesses she had lost consciousness. Instead of calling 911, he left the home. The child suffered irreversible brain damage from lack of oxygen after her heart stopped.

He was tried and convicted of neglect causing substantial bodily harm in September 2011, but the Nevada Supreme Court reversed the conviction, citing an error in the instructions given to the jury.

He was retried this past September and, once again, jurors found him guilty.

Assistant District Attorney Mark Krueger said Carrigan was sentenced Monday to between five and 15 years in prison.
