Game, set, mud

As the Canaloupe Festival was rocking, just to the east more than a dozen volleyball teams slopped around in the mud at the fairgrounds.

The Churchill County Parks and Recreation Department’s annual mud volleyball tournament was a hit. Thirteen teams joined this year’s action to win cash and trophies.

Dirty Natives came out on top as champs followed by Free Mudstache Ride and Driveline. The Cantaloupe champs — or consolation winners — was Chicken Lips.

Parks and Recreation supervisor Danny Gleich said the tournament was successful and ran smooth over two days.

One concern, the smoke from the Rim Fire in California, turned out not to be an issue, he added.

“It was nice,” Gleich said. “We were not in the line of the smoke. The games were comfortable for the players.”

He said a lot of younger teams came out, while traditional mainstays opted for other activities around Northern Nevada. Nevertheless, Gleich said the two-day tournament was fun for all who participated.

Upcoming events

The Churchill County Parks and Recreation Department will host the annual NFL Punt, Pass and Kick competition on Sept. 21 at E.C. Best Elementary School.

Youngsters ages 8-15 are eligible to compete, although a birth certificate is required at check-in.

After the local qualifier, those who qualify will participate in the Northern Nevada sectional, which will be three to four weeks after the local competition.

The No Hill Hundred gears up to ride on Oct. 5 at the Churchill County Fairgrounds.

The event is broken into 30-, 60- and 100-mile tours and is hosted by the Churchill County Cyclist. Riders will be provided jerseys and other swag commerating the 11th annual event.
