Kate Marshall is picking up some early endorsements in her campaign for secretary of state, a move that could discourage other Democrats from entering the race.

Marshall on Wednesday announced the backing of the Northern Nevada Building and Trades Council and the Las Vegas Police Protection Association board of directors.

The building council says it decided to “step out early” and support Marshall as the best candidate for the job. The police association notes her community involvement.

Marshall has served two, four-year terms as state treasurer and is barred by law from seeking re-election to that post. She hopes to succeed fellow Democrat Ross Miller as Nevada’s chief election officer.

State Sen. Kelvin Atkinson reportedly is also considering running for that office.
