Carson girls place second

SPARKS — Carson High’s girls cross country team placed second to Douglas at Saturday’s Twilight Invitational at Shadow Mountain Park.

Eveline Delgado was third, clocking a 16:15 for 4000 meters, while Cindy Juchtzer was ninth in 16:34. Alex Drozdoff took 14th in 17:01. Shelby Brown finished 24th in 17:35 and Allison Greene was 51st in 18:26. The Senators had 96 points compared to 82 for Douglas.

The CHS boys were seventh out of 12 teams. Placer won the event.

Anthony Cacioppo was 24th in 14:21 followed by Tylar Chester (30th, 14:35), Porfirio Jauregui (48th, 15:04), Daniel Jauregui (49th, 15:07) and Michael Leiken (67th, 15:23) were the scoring members of the CHS squad. The JV boys and girls both finished fifth. Wyatt Cartier led the boys with a 13th place finish in 15:32, while Rebecca Matley was 15th in 18:51.

Dayton compete at Whittell

ZEPHYR COVE — J.J. Ply was 21st to lead the Dayton boys at the Whittell Warrior Invitational on Friday. Nick Langstaff was 31st followed by Toby Tapley, Oakley Workman and Brady Heusser. Hanna Elissa ran a 23:37 for the 2.6-mile course, but her placing wasn’t available.

“It’s a tough course,” said Dayton coach Shawn Anderson. “The time are (always) slower than usual, but they sure have fun.”

Dayton finishes second

YERINGTON — Yerington knocked off Dayton 25-23 and 25-1 to win its own tournament on Saturday.

Madi Foley led Dayton with 20 kills, four aces, two blocks and five digs in a losing effort. Seter Peach Coons had 20 assists and five digs. Taryn Schriner finished with five kills and four digs, and Cheyennne Strong had four kills.

Dayton, now 15-1 on the season, beat Smith Valley (25-9, 25-17), Douglas (19-25, 25-15, 15-13), Lowry (25-16, 25-15) and Bishop Union (25-19, 25-17). Ashley Vickers suffered a possible head injury and had to be taken by medical helicopter to Renown in Reno.

On Friday, Dayton went 3-0 in pool play. The Dust Devils beat Elko (25-10, 14-25 and 15-2), Whittell (25-18 and 25-14) and Battle Mountain (25-12 and 25-12). Madi Foley led the way in kills with support from Ashley Vickers. Coons and Schriner also played well.

Dayton hopes league play on Tuesday at Truckee at 6 p.m.

Carson goes 2-2 in tourney

CARMICHAEL — Carson High’s volleyball posted a 2-2 record in the Carmichael Tournament on Saturday, but may have lost Gina Peacock for an extended period of time with a concussion.

Carson opened with a 25-15, 20-25 and 15-9 win over Santa Maria and then knocked off Mesa Verde 25-14 and 25-7. Carson followed with a 25-20 and 25-12 loss to Enterprise and then lost 25-13 and 25-15 to St. Mary’s-Stockton.

Kylie Riske set in place of Danielle Good, who didn’t make the trip because she violated team rules. Riske had 34 assists, eight aces, two digs and three kills. Jaycie Roberts contributed 25 digs, two sets and five aces, while Savannah Smith had 19 digs, 7.5 blocks, five kills and four aces. Julianna Anderson finished with 10 kills, three digs and an ace. Peacock had five aces, five kills and three digs. Gaby Palazzolo finished with nine kills and two assists.

“She (Peacock) was diving for a ball and hit her head on the floor,” coach Robert Maw said. “She made a great play to get the ball back up. I’m not sure we’ll get her back this year.”

Peacock spent the night in a Sacramento area hospital, and was expected to be released today.

Carson hosts Reno in its Division I opener Tuesday at 6 p.m.
