Fallon’s trip east last weekend resulted in a split against Elko and Spring Creek.
On Saturday, Elko dropped Fallon in four sets, 25-14, 25-12, 20-25, 25-13, while the Lady Wave dropped the Spartans, 3-1, on Friday.
Elko’s Emilie Morton put the Indians up 2-0 when she pushed the ball over top of the Fallon blockers to win the second set.
The Greenwave, however, bounced back in the second set to try and make it a match.
“I think it’s always tough to come into that third game with the same fire you had in the first two games,” Elko coach Cammie Nelson said. “The intensity always seems to dip a little. I was proud of how they came back in the fourth game.”
Fallon’s Evan Matheson and Ali Tedford each pounded home kills to start the third game, and the Wave ran out to a 6-2 lead.
The Tribe stormed back with a couple of big hits from Bailey Betancourt and Josalynn Harris to start closing the gap. Later in the set, a Fallon hitting miscue gave Elko a 9-8 lead. The game continued back and fourth until the Lady Wave broke an 18-all tie. They rolled off four straight points to take command of the set.
In the fourth, Elko regained its composure from the first two games. The Tribe went ahead 10-6 after a hit by Kelsey Gailey. The lead was extended by a Gailey hit that caught the net and fell on Fallon’s side.
Several rotations later, Gailey recorded one of her match-high 14 kills to make it 14-8, and Marissa Elquist had a hit ricochet off Fallon blocker for a 16-8 advantage.
Fallon’s Mary Scholz had a kill and a tip late in the match to slow down Elko’s runaway. Teammate Megan McCormick also had a block of an Elko hit to cut the deficit to 22-12.
Scholz had a team-high 12 kills, while Tedford and McCormick each added three. Tedford also chipped in with six assists.
With just a couple of plays needed to close out the match, Emily Elquist and Harris combined to a block a Fallon shot to bring up match point, and two plays later, Harris tipped the ball over for the final point.
Nelson said she believed it was the first time she has beaten Fallon during her coaching tenure.
