Loran Nicholas Uhart

1942 - 2014

Loran Uhart, a true native Nevada cattleman, passed away July 31st, 2014, at his home in Carson Valley after a hard fought battle with Leukemia. He was with all of his family and died peacefully in his sleep. A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 9th at 1 p.m. in Minden at High Sierra Fellowship, 1701 Lucerne St. Loran was born April 30th, 1942, in Carson City, NV, the 2nd born of Basque and German decendants Nick Uhart and Ada Hellwinkel. With six brothers and sisters it was a full house: Marilyn (Wills), Albert Uhart, Janice (Griffitts), BetteJean (Ganschow), Jim Uhart, and Darrell Uhart. He graduated from Douglas High School and began his ranching career as foreman and ranch manager of the historic Van Sickle Station Ranch south of Genoa, and eventually operated the Uhart home Ranch next to the Airport in Minden. Loran was a leader in the Polled Hereford breed cattle industry, consigning bulls to the Fallon All-Breeds Bull Sale for over 20 years, as well as serving the agricultural community on the Alpine Land & Reservoir Co. Board from 1992-2004. He was also well known for growing some of the finest grass and alfalfa hay for 50+ years. On December 18th, 1964, Loran married Joy Flesher, his sunshine and wife of 49 years. He was enlisted in the 150th Ordinance Co. of the Nevada National Guard, Carson City, Nevada, for 6 years, becoming proficient as a Welder-Blacksmith in Fort Lewis, Washington, also graduating from Sharpshooter to Expert in Marksmanship. He was honorably discharged in December 1969 as Staff Sargent with Remarks of “Excellent” in both Conduct and Efficiency. Loran is the father of Nick Uhart (Rhonda), Sarita Uhart (predeceased 1986), and Domingo Uhart (Ruby), and the proud grandfather of Justin and Cassi Uhart, and Katlyn, Laynie, and Marcus Uhart. The patriarch has “passed the torch” and we will all miss him immensely. Please consider making a contribution to the cause of your choice as a memorial in his name.
