The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.

SILVER DOLLAR: Former Carson High star and current University of Nevada pitcher Adam Whitt made his mark this summer by being named as the Relief Pitcher of the Year in the nation’s most prestigious summer college baseball league, the Cape Cod League.

SILVER DOLLAR: Another former CHS star and former University of Nevada pitcher Colby Blueberg deserves a Silver Dollar for a dominant start to his minor league career in the San Diego Padres organization.

SILVER DOLLAR: To all those involved in last weekend’s Sierra Youth Football League Carson Experience, especially to those who organized such a large event. About 15,000 players, coaches and parents were expected to participate in the event in which teams from all over Northern Nevada and Northern California received the chance to play in a series of scrimmages against each other in a Jamboree.

SILVER DOLLAR: To all those involved, especially the children, in the Carson City Library’s Summer Reading Program.

SILVER DOLLAR: To two entertainment legends, Robin Williams and Lauren Bacall, who graced this region with their talent. Williams, who sadly committed suicide last week, was known as a gracious regular in the Lake Tahoe area. Bacall, who died at the age of 89 last week, starred in John Wayne’s last movie, “The Shootist,” which was shot right here in Carson City.

WOODEN NICKEL: To Tony Stewart. Stewart’s over-the-top, far-too-aggressive racing style for dirt tracks against semipro to amateur caliber racers finally caught up to him in sadly, a tragic way last weekend in the death of Kevin Ward Jr. Stewart’s actions were wreckless at best — and possibly criminal at worst.
