The state Health Division received a total of 502 applications for licenses under the newly established medical marijuana program, 39 percent or about 195 of them for dispensaries.
That is more than double the total 76 dispensaries allowed under the law.
The division accepted applications for four different types of licenses for nine days ending at 5 p.m. Aug. 18.
The next largest category of applicants are seeking cultivator — grower — licenses, 35 percent or 175 applicants.
That is followed by those seeking permission to produce marijuana-based oils and edible products, 23 percent or 115 applicants.
The remaining applications are for testing laboratories to assure quality and proper labeling of the pot and edibles being sold at dispensaries.
The division has until Nov. 3 to review the applications and issue provisional licenses. Then those applicants must deal with the local governments where they seek to do business for the licenses then need to open up.
Some 70 percent of the applicants want to do business in Clark County with 21 percent looking to open shop in Washoe. The breakout in the remaining counties including Carson City was not available. Detailed information on the applicants is being kept confidential under terms of the law approved by the 2013 Legislature.
Health Division officials say there are currently about 5,900 medical marijuana cardholders in the state.
