The “Appeal” to Publish Telegrams. We have been, for the past fortnight, perfecting arrangements with the Atlantic and Pacific Telegram Company whereby we may furnish the readers of the Appeal with telegraphic dispatches from the East and West. We hope to be able to commence this new and desirable feature of our little paper on the 8th. We are anxious to begin publishing the telegraphic news from the East with the proceedings in Congress.

Miss Nevada in New York. The Herald thus speaks of Miss Nevada’s first appearance in New York. It was quite astonishing to witness the enthusiasm of the veteran opera goers. They had gone to hear a vocalist whom Paris has petted, and they expected to find her a pretty novice, to whom their feelings of patriotism would compel them to give mild approbation. With amazement that slowly deepened into admiration, they saw before them a singer of high accomplishments ...

Basketball on the 18th. Arrangements have been completed whereby Carson will be treated to another interesting basketball game. It will take place on the evening of the 18th at the Grand Theater between the capital team of this city and Reno High. They have been practicing and hope to be in condition to add another scalp to their belt.

70 years ago

Pvt. Lawrence Jeppson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Jeppson, former residents of this city, is visiting at his parents home in Reno for a short time. He recently completed a course in engineering at the University of Utah. Lt. Morris Jeppson visited his parents recently. Another son, Lt. Robert Jeppson, USNR, is on an aircraft carrier in the Pacific.

50 years ago

Gov. Grant Sawyer will officially welcome two industries to this traditionally agricultural community Tuesday. He will speak at a luncheon for executives of the Rockingham Sleepwear Company and Pacific Coast boiler Corporation.

Trent Dolan is the son of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
