VITA tax preparation under way at BRIC

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance volunteers can help people obtain a special federal tax credit, according to Michael Salogga, a manager at Carson City’s Business Resource Innovation Center.

The business development at city government’s BRIC said the amount under the earned income tax credit boosted refunds for eligible works on average in 2011 by $2,200. He said the total might go as high as $6,143.

“This money can make a real difference to those struggling in this recovering economy,” Salogga said in a news release. He said the VITA volunteers began helping at the BRIC this month and do the work free for those who qualify. The BRIC is at 108 E. Proctor St. VITA help is available Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5-7 p.m., and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon.
