140 years ago

Captain Coleman tells us there are 117 convicts in the state prison now, and two more coming. The captain says they are about done erecting, separate from the prison, a new and commodious dining room. This will allow the erection of a an entire double tier of stone and iron cells on the south side of the present dining room. Either the authorities are more vigilant than elsewhere, or our prosecuting attorneys are more successful, or we are the wickedest state in the known world.

There has been for some days past a report that Will Davis, the brother of the editor of the Appeal, recently died in Benecia, and several have called with condolences. It is reported here that William is taking three square meals a day and healthy enough to take four if the opportunity presents itself.

100 years ago

The heavy team of Dick Savage got away form him on North Carson Street about 4 p.m. this afternoon, running down Carson Street until it checked by coming in contact with the fountain at the corner of King and Carson streets. It is reported Mr. Savage was injured by being thrown from the wagon.

70 years ago

More than 50 representatives of the National Association of Colleges and Universities Pilot Training of the sixth region are meeting in Carson City today to discuss and better understand the program in the four western states. Sen. P.A. McCarran, D-Nevada, highlighted the program today under the Civilian Pilot Training act of 1939.

The trial of three men accused of kidnapping Frank Sinatra, Jr., began today in Los Angeles.

Expanding U.S. Highway 395 to four lanes form Clear Creek to Minden is being given a top priority by the Nevada Department of Transportation.

Trent Dolan is the son of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
