Wave, Vikings in battle for playoffs

After a weekend split and a loss by South Tahoe, the Fallon boys basketball team is in position to clinch a Northern Division I-A postseason bid this weekend.

The Greenwave survived Dayton, 44-40, on Friday but was outmuscled 66-54 by Lowry on Saturday. Fallon sits at 7-7 in league play, tied with South Tahoe for fourth.

The Vikings, meanwhile, suffered a 65-58 home loss to Fernley last weekend. South Tahoe hosted Sparks on Tuesday, while Fallon caps the regular season against Sparks on Friday and South Tahoe on Saturday. Fallon lost to South Tahoe, 71-67, in January.

Evett was the Wave’s go-to man at Dayton as the 6-foot-5 junior tallied a game-high 26 points. No other Fallon player reached double figures.

The win against Dayton was a must, while an upset over Lowry was unexepected. Nevertheless, Fallon’s gift came in the form of its cross-valley rivals in Fernley.

With a win on the road, the Vaqueros created an easy win-and-you’re-in scenario.

Against Lowry, the Wave struggled early from the floor as the Buckaroos raced out to an 18-11 first quarter lead. Garrett Naveran and Josh Watterson controlled the paint as Naveran had a game-high 26 points and Watterson added 13.

Fallon, meanwhile, was led by 15 points from Evett and 14 from Clay Davidson, whose four 3-pointers kept Fallon within striking distance in the second quarter.

Lowry, though, busted the game open in the third quarter outscoring the Wave 22-13 for a 54-38 lead.

Fallon was uncharacteristic in its shooting as the Wave struggled to find the rim on at least six shots. Despite the shooting woes, Fallon sliced the lead to 60-53 on a basket by Connor Richardson late in the fourth quarter.

But Lowry was too tough and ended the game on a 6-1 run.
