The longtime head of the Food Bank of Northern Nevada and a Las Vegas councilman have been appointed to the National Commission on Hunger.

Cherie Jamason has been president and chief executive of the food bank for more than two decades. The food bank distributes more than 10 million pounds of food a year.

Ricki Barlow is a Las Vegas City Councilman.

Both were appointed Wednesday to the National Commission on Hunger by U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

The 10-member board was established in the 2014 Omnibus spending bill approved in January.

The commission’s job is to develop new strategies using public-private partnerships and greater community participation to combat domestic hunger and reduce the need for government nutrition programs.
