Veteran of the Month

Friends, community leaders and military associates gathered at the state capital building in Carson City to take part as Gov. Brian Sandoval honored Clarence “Bud” Southard as Nevada’s Veteran of the Month for December 2013.

“It’s particularly important to recognize great people who do great things, “said Sandoval. “Bud has changed and improved lives through his work and has enhanced the state of Nevada through his work.”

The Carson City resident is a member of many veteran organizations including the Navy League, Veterans of Foreign Wards and Fleet Reserve Association. Much of his work has been focused on assistance to active military personal and their families. “Bud’s work with the young active servicemen is an invaluable contribution to help military families with the rigors of active duty challenges” said NDVS Director Kat Miller.

Education has been another focus of Mr. Southard’s efforts heading the Navy League Scholarship Committee and he helped to establish a scholarship in honor of Pearl Harbor Survivor, State Sen. Lawrence E. Jacobsen which is presented each year to a Marine for his academic participation.

“There have been a lot of things that have all combined for why I’m receiving credit for this work, but it’s with the help of other people,” said Southard. “A lot of this would have never happened had it not been for the platform that the Navy Leagues gives me. I’m just a face in the crowd out there and this plaque belongs to everyone for their support of these organizations.”

Basic training

Army Pfc. Shay N. Thran has graduated from Basic Combat Training at Fort Leonard Wood, Waynesville, Mo.

During the nine weeks of training, the soldier received instruction in drill and ceremony, weapons, rifle marksmanship qualification, bayonet combat, chemical warfare, field training and tactical exercises, marches, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, and Army history, traditions, and core values.

Thran is the daughter of Kathy Cates and stepdaughter of Roland Cates, both of Fallon.

She is a 2008 graduate of Churchill County High School.
