RENO — Sue Wagner, a lifelong Republican and the first woman elected as Nevada lieutenant governor, has left the GOP.

The 73-year-old Wagner tells the Reno Gazette-Journal that she changed her voter registration to nonpartisan several days ago out of frustration with the GOP’s shift to the far right.

Wagner says she no longer likes what the Republican Party stands for.

A former assemblywoman and state senator from Reno, Wagner also previously served on the Nevada Gaming Commission.

Wagner served as lieutenant governor from 1991 through 1995. Mentioned as a potential gubernatorial candidate, she left elected office after her first term as lieutenant governor because of injuries suffered in a plane crash while campaigning in 1990.
