Stanley Lloyd Hunewill longtime rancher of Bridgeport, California and Wellington, Nevada passed away on July 9, 2014. Stan was born September 30, 1934 in Glendale, California. He grew up and attended school in both Bridgeport, California and Smith Valley, Nevada. He went to college for two years at Colorado A&M, then finished college at U.C. Davis (to be closer to his sweetheart, Jan) with a degree in Animal Science. In 1956 he joined the U.S. Navy and attended and graduated from Naval Officer’s Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island. By then, Stan and Jan were married and were expecting their first child, Jeff. The Navy then sent him to Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, California where he graduated as a Meteorologist in the spring of 1958. He then served at the Naval Fleet Weather Central in Honolulu, Hawaii for three years. Following his time in the Navy, he and Jan came home and helped run his family’s ranches in Bridgeport and Smith Valley for the rest of his life. During his tenure on the ranch, he was Conservationist of the year in 1976 and Nevada Ranch Manager of the year 2009 (Society of Range Management). From 1968-1988, he was on the Board of Directors of the Sacramento Farm Credit District, (Production Credit Association), he also was appointed to the U.S. Board of Water Commissioners, The Board of Directors of Select Sires (a Utah based A.I. bull service), and the Eastern Sierra Land Trust Board. He enjoyed trying new things whether it was agriculture, grazing innovations, travel, climbing, skiing, or computers. He was a lifelong learner, he had a great sense of humor, was very spiritual, was a great father, and a loving husband. He is survived by his wife Jan; his children Jeff (Denise Miller), Betsy (Jon Elliott), and Megan (Bart Paul) all of Smith Valley and Bridgeport; his grandchildren: Blair Hunewill (Haley Howard), Leslie Hunewill (Edo Dar), Tyler Hunewill Elliott, Dalton Hunewill Wright, Rhiannon Hunewill Wright and Aspen Hunewill Wright. He was preceded in death by his parents, Stanley Hyde Hunewill and LeNore (Martin) Hunewill Brown; by his half-siblings, Claude and Alton Hunewill and June Hunewill Usher.
