Junior High rodeo team solid at state

One Fallon athlete will make the journey to the National Junior High Finals Rodeo in Des Moines, Iowa.

Jace McEwen qualified for team roping with partner Bailey Fullmer of Las Vegas. McEwen also qualified in breakaway roping and the .22 rifle shoot.

The national rodeo is June 22-28.

As for the other Fallon cowboys and cowgirls, they had a strong showing at last week’s Nevada State Finals Rodeo in Winnemucca but did not qualify for nationals.

Leighton Beyer, an eighth-grader, was the closest to nationals as she finished fifth in girls goat tying, sixth in breakaway roping, seventh in team roping with partner Matt Goings, eighth in ribbon roping with Jace McEwen and 13th in barrel racing and pole bending.

Goings, also in eighth grade, was sixth in chute dogging, seventh in team roping and boys goat tying and eighth in breakaway.

Seventh-grader Jayme Waggoner, meanwhile, was eighth in barrel racing, ninth in pole bending, 14th in goat tying and 19th in breakaway roping.

Chloe Lambert, rounded out the Fallon athletes with an 11th-place showing in goat tying and was 12th in breakaway roping.

The high school state finals rodeo is June 13-15 in Ely.

The team, though, had another solid outing at the Lincoln County Rodeo on May 16-17 in Pioche.

In the high school event, Mackay Spyrow took third on both days in team roping. Teammates Blain Jensen (header) and Jes Tews (heeler) took second in the first go, while Sam Goings placed fifth and ninth.

In the junior high division, Matt Goings took first in boys goat tying in the first go.

Beyer took third and ninth in girls goat tying in the first and second gos, respectively, was sixth and second in breakaway roping and took fourth in pole bending in the first go. Waggoner added a fourth-place finish in barrel racing in the first go.
