Los Mexaniacs present free Fallon concert

If you listened to Garrison Keillor’s “A Prairie Home Companion” on Sunday, you probably heard Los Texmanics perform live on the show.

You’ll also get a chance to hear them right here in Fallon on June 21 when they roll into town for a free in-the-park concert on the Centennial Stage which is located between West and East Park streets in front of the Art Center.

The show will begin at 7:30 p.m. — bring snacks and/or a picnic supper — and the galleries and art bar at the center will be open following the performance. For more information

Los Texmaniacs is a band that was founded by Max Baca in the mid 1990s and, as you might have heard if you caught “Prairie Home Companion,” their sound fuses fold time rock ‘n’ roll as well as some country tunes and improvisational jazz riffs with the hundred year old traditions of Tex_Mex music from the Rio Grande Valley.

The group was also a big hit at Western Folklife Center’s Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko. Baca has said that he’s interested in creating “hip music that everyone in the world can relate to.”

The combination of accordion, bajo sexto (a large instrument known as the grizzle bear of guitars), electric bass and drums makes for a rollicking good time music perfect for a summer night in the park. Lost Texmaniacs have released two CDs, “Borders & Bailes,” which won the Grammy Award for Best Tejano album.

“Texas Towns & Tex Mex Sounds,” contains, in addition to traditional Tex Mex sounds such as polkas and ballads, some classic western swing versions of country songs such as “Waltz Across Texas,” “El Paso,” “San Antonio Rose,” and “The Eyes of Texas.” For more information on the band you can check out texmaniacs.com
