Monster flip

From freestyle motocross to monster trucks to dirt-track racing, Octane Fest provides an array of motorsports choices.

The seventh annual event kicks off today with the monster truck jamboree at the Churchill County Fairgrounds. Taking over much of the production of the festival, though, is WGAS Motorsports, which has produced the past two jamborees.

Always aiming to push the limit, WGAS will host a pair of jamborees today and Saturday. Today’s event begins at 5:30 p.m., while Saturday’s action starts at 6 p.m. John Borba of WGAS could not be reached for comment.

Although there are two events, only Saturday’s show will feature the first-ever attempt of a monster truck back flip in Northern Nevada by Iron Outlaw, according to Executive Director Rick Gray of the Fallon Tourism and Convention Authority.

“I think they will do a great job of putting on two monster truck shows,” he added. “Both shows are really heavy with monster trucks. It will be a lot fun.”

Friday’s show, however, features a free pit party with paid admission and freestyle motocross action. Both days, though, will have mud drags and fans will also be treated to the Northern Nevada Outlaw Karts series, showing off the skills of youth racers.

Also on Saturday, the IMCA Modified division will hit the track at Rattlesnake Raceway. The action begins at 11 a.m.

The money races will payout $2,000 for the IMCA, $1,000 for IMCA and $700 for Sport B Mods.

One subtraction from this year’s event, though, will be the Maine Street Rumble car show. Gray said the attendance from the Hurricams Car Club is low and affected the logistics of running the event.

Despite the absence of the Maine Street Rumble, motorsports fans still have another option at Top Gun Raceway.

The Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series returns to Fallon with its Pacific Division races.

Gates at Top Gun Raceway open at 7 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. Qualifying and time trials start at 8 a.m. Saturday. Top Dragster, Comp Eliminator and Top Sportsman qualify at 11 a.m., 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturday. Eliminations start Sunday at 9 a.m.

Tickets for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Top Gun Raceway are $10 both days and children a 5 and under are free with a paid adult.
