Preps: Blueberg, Holton key Senators’ win

RENO — Key two-run hits by Chase Blueberg and John Holton keyed a five-run fifth ining and carried Carson High’s baseball team to a season-opening 11-4 win over Enochs at the Mike Bearman Memorial Tournament on Thursday afternoon at Reno High.

Carson plays South Tahoe today at 9 a.m. at Wooster and then plays Reno at 3 p.m. at Reno.

Carson pounded out 12 hits, two each from Blueberg, Jace Zampirro, Holton and Brandon Allen. Gehrig Tucker, Josiah Pongasi, T.J. Thomsen and Joe Birri added one each.

Enochs scored single runs off Blueberg in the first, second and fourth to take a 3-1 lead.

Carson scored three times in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Allen, a triple by Holton and a run-scoring single by Zampirro.

That set the stage for the fifth when Blueberg and Holton had their two-run hits and Allen contributed an RBI double to make it 9-3. Enochs scored one in the sixth off reliever Chazz Nystrom, and Zampirro completed the scoring in the bottom of the sixth with a single.

Blueberg worked the first five, allowing three runs and five hits.

Douglas 10, Truckee 0

MINDEN — In his first at-bat for the Douglas High School baseball team on Thursday, all freshman Haden Keller did was deliver a walkoff RBI single to cap a 10-0 season-opening victory against Truckee.

Keller’s bounced a sharp hit past first base to drive in Dillon Lopez in the bottom half of the fifth inning of a game played as part of the Mike Bearman Memorial Tournament.

Douglas returns to action in the preseason tournament today with two games in Sparks — at 2 p.m. against Spanish Springs and 6:30 p.m. against Reed.

Carson loses opener

SACRAMENTO — Jennifer Purcell doubled in two runs and pitched two shutout innings, but it wasn’t enough, as Carson fell to Lincoln, 8-6, Thursday afternoon at the Elk Grove Preseason Tournament at the Sacramento Softball Complex.

Carson, 0-1, is scheduled to play Antelope and De Oro today, also at the SSC.

Carson took a 2-0 lead in the first on a run-scoring double byBreuer and a single by Michelle Perry.Lincln scored three in the first off starter/loser Breuer, who gave up two runs in 1.2 innings. Purcell’s double in the second and a homer by Malia Tiffer gave Carson a 5-3 lead, but Kaitlyn Jimmy allowed four second-inning runs as Lincoln took a 7-5 lead. Lincoln scored its last run in the third to up its margin to 8-5.

Carson scored its final runs in the fourth, but the Senators were unable to get any closer. The game was called after five because of the time limit.

Breuer also had two hits for Carson, while Kandis Tuttle, Perry, Malia Tiffer, Aubrey Northrup and Jimmy added a hit each.
