Spanish Springs High sweeps Carson girls

SPARKS — Carson jumped to a 4-1 lead, but Spanish Springs bounced back for a 7-6 9-inning win in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader.

Carson dropped the nightcap 5-4 to fall to 7-13 in league play entering Wednesday and Thursday games against Douglas.

With the score tied at 6, Sadye Rouland came to the plate and singled home Alyx Penrod.

Jennifer Purcell racked up two RBIs on two hits for the Senators. She doubled home a run in the second inning and singled in the sixth inning.

Becka Breuer worked out of several tough spots for Carson. She pitched 8 2/3 innings and allowed three earned runs on seven hits.

Alyssa Batastini got the win in relief for Spanish Springs. She pitched five innings and allowed no runs.

Spanish Springs was sparked by Rouland and Hayley Fein, who teamed up for five hits and four RBIs.

In the nightcap, Spanish Springs grabbed a 5-4 victory. Batastini got it done on the rubber on the way to a win. She allowed four runs over seven innings. She struck out five, walked none and surrendered 11 hits.

Kandis Tuttle went 3-4, drove in one and scored one run. She doubled in the first inning and singled in the third and sixth innings.

The bottom of the first saw Spanish Springs High School take an early lead, 3-0.

Carson pushed across one run in both the third inning and the fifth. In the third, Aubrey Northrup drove in Jennifer Purcell with a single.

Dayton 12-12 Truckee 4-3

TRUCKEE — A seven-run fifth inning carried Dayton to a 12-4 win over Truckee in the first game of Friday’s doubleheader.

Dayton also won the second game, grabbing a 12-3 decision.

Ashley Morrison and Serena Cazel each delivered run-scoring doubles in the seven-run inning. Cazel went 3-for-5 with three RBI. Makayla Shadle, who fanned 10, also collected two hits.

In the nightcap, Shadle struck out 12 batters, including her 800th strikeout victim to end the game.

Seven runs in the opening three innings allowed Dayton to easily put away Truckee. An RBI triple by Nichole Vienneau, an RBI triple by Shadle, an RBI triple by Shalia Powell, an RBI single by Hannah Stevenson, and a run-scoring groundout by Morrison supplied the early offense for Dayton. Shadle had two extra-base hits.

Reed 8-14, Douglas 0-4

SPARKS — Reed swept a doubleheader Saturday at home against Douglas, 8-0 and 14-4, in a rematch between last year’s Northern Division I region finalists.

Game one ended in the sixth inning when Reed scored twice to win on the 10-run mercy rule. Reed took the second game behind Jacquelyn Sertic’s six-shutout.

Douglas collected nine hits in the opener. Corryne Diaz hit 3-for-3 and Allison Meyer 3-for-4 to lead the Tigers, who scored all four of their runs in the fifth inning.

BASEBALL

Douglas 2-7, Reed 3-5

SPARKS — Douglas rebounded from a tough opening game loss and pulled out a narrow victory in game two to salvage a split of the Northern Division I doubleheader.

Kyle Johnson pitched five-hit ball in game one only to emerge as the hard luck loser, however, the senior came on to get the final out and earn a save in the nightcap.

Johnson also hit a three-run homer, Matt Santos had a two-run homer and Kaleb Foster a solo home run to help the Tigers build a 7-1 lead. Foster also hit a solo home run in the sixth inning that brought the Tigers to within 3-2 in game one.

Cole Peck pitched six innings to earn credit for the win. Reed scored four runs in the seventh inning and had the potential tying runs in scoring position when Johnson got the final out on a ground ball to Zach Davies at third base.

SWIMMING

Carson sweeps McQueen boys, girls

Elizabeth Everest won two individual events to lead the Carson girls to a 158-129 win over the Lancers on Saturday. Damonte and Reno also participated in the four-way meet.

Everest won the 200 free in 2:05.71 and the 500 free in 5:40.12. Christy Krahn placed second in the 100 breast (1:19.50) and took third in the 100 free (1:01.36). Vanessa Rauch was second in the 100 back (1:11.41), while Kelsey Bradley was third in the 100 breast (1:23.28) and third in the 50 free (28:53). Nora Steng was third in the 100 back (1:13.11), and Ashley Meyer had a third in the 200 IM (2:35.93).

Dagen Kipling led the boys to a 151-40 victory. Kipling won the 100 breast in 1:07.55 and was second in the 200 IM in 2:10.02. Casey Garrett won the 100 fly in 1:00.45 and was fourth in the 500 free in 6:12.81. Dylan Popoff was third in the 200 free (2:08.38), while Drew Briggeman was third in the 100 back in 1:06.12. Jesse Session was third in the 500 free (5:50.67) and third in the 100 fly (1:08.42). Josh Breen was third in the 100 breast (1:18.64).

TRACK AND FIELD

Ply wins high jump at Reed

SPARKS — Benji Ply continued his sterling spring season for the Dayton High School track and field team Friday night as he won the boys high jump with a personal record height of 6-6 at Reed’s High Desert Invitational.

Ply, a junior, also equaled his personal best in the pole vault with a 13-6 clearance for third-place and helped the Dust Devils win the 4x400 relay in a school record time of 3:27.85. Dallon Mendoza, Skyler Bernston and Andrew Goodman completed the team, which won the race by a margin of five seconds ahead of Reed.
