Carson golfers 4th in tune-up

GENOA — Dalton Butler finished in a three-way tie for first, firing a 2-over-par 74 at Genoa Lakes Wednesday to lead the Carson High golf team to a fourth-place finish in the final Sierra League meet before regional play next Tuesday and Wednesday at Thunder Canyon.

Bishop Manogue won with a 394 followed by Galena 414, Douglas 436 and Carson 444. Carson finished the regular season in third place.

“I admit I was hoping for some momentum going into regional play, but the kids are focused on next week,” coach Jeff Rispin said. “Given the scores from other teams in both leagues, we have our work cut out for us, but I have faith in these kids to put together two good rounds.”

Rounding out the scoring for Carson was Danny Manning 89, Andy Cooper 90, Avery Whitt 95, Sam Bruketta 96, and Jake Jones 98.

WNC loses SWAC opener

TWIN FALLS, Idaho — Western Nevada College produced the start that it coveted against North Idaho in the Region 18 softball tournament on Wednesday.

The Wildcats scored four first-inning runs, but the Cardinals rallied behind Hayden Fields’ five RBI for a 10-6 victory on the opening day of the double-elimination tournament.

WNC (12-45) will meet Colorado Northwestern Community College (8-46) in an elimination game at 8:30 a.m. today. The winner would play again at 4 p.m.

A two-run homer by freshman Katilyn Covione, her team-leading seventh of the season, contributed to the Wildcats’ fast start. Lindsey Ashbaugh delivered a run-scoring double and Makenzie Hospodka drove in a run with a single in the first inning.

But the Cardinals (36-20) began chipping away at the deficit in their first at-bat. Madison Anthony’s two-run double to center field cut WNC’s lead in half, 4-2.

North Idaho took the lead for good in the third frame, scoring three times. Anthony led off the rally by homering to left field, and the Cardinals added two more runs, both unearned, to go ahead, 5-4.

Fields doubled in two more runs as North Idaho extended its lead to 7-4 in the fourth.

Five of the Wildcats’ eight hits went for extra bases. Covione and Ashbaugh led WNC with two hits apiece.
