People OK Charter To Climax Long Drive For Home Rule

It’s now—Boulder City, Inc.

Climaxing this community’s long and historic drive to win separation from the government and home rule for the people, 1146 citizens went to the polls Tuesday and voted incorporation into being by accepting a charter drawn by representatives of the electorate.

The majority was seven to 1—745 to 167.

The community now has but two final steps to take before actual operation under the laws of the state take effect—one—election of a five man city council from the 10 nominated Tuesday; two—waiting for takeover day, January 4th. (The county commission must go thru the routine step next week of certifying the election.)

The new council will be elected Oct. 13 and will immediately start holding meetings, drafting ordinances and working out contracts with the government to effect the transfer of the government properties to the city.

There were 745 votes for the charter and 167 against it. When the voting machines were checked after the polls closed, it was discovered that many residents neglected to vote for or against the charter.

Voting was steady throughout the day, with a sporadic spurt after the baseball game was concluded between the Dodgers and the Braves. The last half hour at the Elementary School gym was very quiet.

A general election is called for Oct. 13 and the polls at the Elementary School Gym and the High School gym will open at 8 a.m. and close at 6 p.m. Voting will be on the first 10 names.

Following certification of this next election by County officials, the City Council will be seated and will take over limited reins of the local government.

A City Manager will be appointed and he in turn will name his city officials.
