Reedy out-raises incumbent Wheeler

Challenger Robin Reedy has collected significantly more in contributions through the first reporting period than incumbent Assemblyman Jim Wheeler.

Reedy filed to oust Wheeler from the Assembly District 39 seat in large part because of Wheeler’s remarks to a gathering of Storey County Republicans on the subject of slavery. Wheeler was attempting to make the point he believes an elected lawmaker should vote the wishes of his constituents even if he disagreed. But the example he chose was he would vote to restore slavery if the voters demanded it.

That drew sharp rebukes from all corners of the political spectrum including fellow Republicans Gov. Brian Sandoval and Sen. Dean Heller and calls from numerous others in his party he resign.

Reedy, a former treasurer’s office employee and chief of staff to ex-governor Jim Gibbons, raised $45,355 in the reporting period from January through May 16. Wheeler, who is seeking his second two-year-term representing the district, raised less than half that, $20,133.

Reedy, however, spent much more of the cash contributed to her than Wheeler — $38,697 compared to $14,491.

Reedy’s major contributors include several resorts including MGM, WYNN and Las Vegas Sands, as well as AT&T and NV Energy.

Wheeler received significant amounts from fellow Assemblyman John Ellison of Elko, the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center and one of its partners Lance Gillman. His largest contribution was $3,500 from Gardnerville resident and businessman Tom Starrett.
