Both incumbents were easily re-elected to the Carson City School Board on Tuesday.

Ron Swirczek defeated challenger Jim Bathgate in the District 1 race by 8,072 to 5,090. Incumbent Stacie Wilke received 7,495 to David Carter’s 5,647 votes in District 3.

“I think it shows people are approving of what we’re doing in the school district.” Wilke said. “I think that’s definitely a vote of confidence for our board.”

Swirczek ran his 2010 campaign on the platform of creating a vision for the school district that would include partnerships with the community.

Since his election, the district hosted a series of public meetings to develop a strategic plan.

“I’m really excited about continuing with the community partnerships and providing every kid with the opportunity to learn beyond the classroom,” Swirczek said. “We’re combining academic achievement with real-world experience.”

While he said it was his initial impetus that set the plan in motion, it has been shaped and augmented by several others working together.

“I want to thank all the teachers, administrators, support staff and the community for giving me the opportunity to keep going,” he said.

The board will see two new faces in January as well.

Ryan Green defeated Jeff Cherpeski, who withdrew from the race but his named remained on the ballot, by a 8,254 to 4,411 vote. Green will replace Lynnette Conrad, who did not seek re-election, in District 4.

He said he’s pleased with the performance of the board now and hopes to contribute his perspective as a father and Carson High School graduate.

“I think like all things, especially when you’re new, you need to come in a little tempered until you appreciate and learn to work with people,” he said. “I’m just thankful that people thought enough of me to vote for me. That’s humbling in itself.”

Deonne Contine ran unopposed in the primary election for the District 6 seat, after incumbent Candace Stowell decided not to run.
