Wishing Tree applications

Applications for the 2014 Wishing Tree Program will be available through Oct. 17.

The Wishing Tree Program provides gifts during the holiday season for Churchill County youth 0 to 17 years old who meet income and residency requirements. Applications may be picked up at Churchill County Social Services, 485 W. B St., Suite 105, during normal business hours. The Wishing Tree Program is possible due to the volunteer efforts of the Independent Telecommunications Pioneer Association and kind community donations.


Amateur radio

The Amateur Radio of Churchill County (ARCC) invites all current amateur (Ham) radio operators or anyone interested in amateur radio to its monthly meeting, which is on the first Tuesday of the month at the Churchill County Administrative Complex, conference room 102, 155 N. Taylor St.

The ARCC also invites anyone to its monthly breakfast (Oct. 19 at 8 a.m.) at the Eagles Hall. Cost is $7.

Amateur radio operators are invited to attend a weekly NET on Sundays at 6 p.m. at repeater 146.97 with a PL of 103.5 Hz The purpose of this net is to exchange information relating to general amateur radio topics.

Fernley Republican Women

The next Fernley Republican Women (FRW) meeting will be held at Fernley High School Library, 1300 Highway 95A, on Oct. 21 at 6:30 p.m. The FRW will host a forum presenting Republican candidates running for Lyon County Commission.

Adult Ed proficiency tests

Churchill County Adult Ed. will be giving the Nevada Proficiencies at the Adult Ed Building, at 255 E. Stillwater Ave., East Bldg in Fallon from Oct. 20-24. The math, science and reading Proficiencies will be given all five days but the writing proficiency will only be given Oct. 22. The testing time starts at 8:30 a.m. and the last test will be given by 2 p.m. each day. Call 775-423-1191 to make arrangements if special testing times are needed.


Toys for Tots Applications

Toys for Tots are now taking applications for 2014.

Applications may be obtained by going on line at www.toysfortots.com and following the link or calling 775-427-4054 and one will be sent. Toys for Tots depends on the great volunteers who donate their time and the people who donate toys or money to buy toys. Without these people there would not be a holiday for the many children that Toys for Tots helps.

E.C. Best fundraiser

It’s Bunko Night!

Come support E.C. Best Elementary School on Oct. 24 at 5:30 p.m. at the firehouse.

School Board candidates night

Training workshop

A training-of-trainers workshop is designed to educate adults who work with teens and teen peer leaders/educators about healthy dating relationships and the prevention of relationship abuse.

Weed information program

There will be a weed information program Oct. 25 at 9 a.m. sponsored by Nevada Department of Agriculture and Churchill County Cooperative Weed Management Area to provide information regarding weed control, management options and weed identification.

The location of the event is Cardinal Drive near Hawk Drive in the Mills Crossing development off of York Lane. There will be a sign at the location. The public is invited to learn about the importance of weed control. For more information, call 775-423-2828.

MOPS meeting

Are you the Mother of a Preschooler, birth to 5 yrs.? Do you need a break a couple of times a month?

We hope at our meetings moms will find encouragement, support, relevant teaching, and opportunities to develop relationships with other women who are in the same stage of life. Volunteers needed for ChArts Store

The Churchill Arts Council (CAC) is sponsored a training for qualified volunteers to work in the ChArts Store @ the Oats Park Art Center.

Those interested must be at least 18 years of age and attend this training session. While volunteers may be able to see performances when they are working at no charge, they must be completely available to work before, during and after performances. Duties will include assisting patrons with purchases, logistics, and other activities as required.

Library services move Nov. 3

Library services will relocate to the Annex at 507 S. Maine St., on Nov 3 to accommodate the library repurpose project. The library will be closed from Oct. 30-Nov. to relocate the Library and to celebrate Nevada Day.

New books, books on CD, DVDs, select backlist titles, and Internet will be available at the Annex.

E-books, downloadable audiobooks, databases, magazines, and independent films are available 24/7 via the website at www.churchillcountylibrary.org.

Community Service Thrift Shop

The Community Service Thrift Shop at 169 E. Center Street is open 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. each weekday.

We are a non-profit organization run by a group of dedicated community volunteers. We do not have room for bicycles, beds, couches or large televisions. We receive donations at the back door from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. weekdays.

We have received lots of material (priced at $1 a yard) and lots of Lace trim’ priced as marked, that is for sale.

Oct 13-17; blouses, shirts, sweaters $1 each.

The proceeds from our sales support families with emergency help, with a written referral from Churchill County Social Services, and also for the scholarship programs for graduating CCHS students and local nursing students. Call JoAnne Baumgart at 775-423-3719 for information.


Blue Sky Thrift Store

The Blue Sky Thrift Store (formerly Fallon Humboldt Shredders) is located at 290 S. Maine St. Hours are Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; and Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Bagged clothing sales, $4 per plastic shopping bag full of clothing available on Saturdays.

Drop-offs are made at the store location. Proceeds help provide services to individuals with developmental disabilities and families in need through community voucher programs.


Stuf ’n Such Thrift Store

The Stuf ‘n Such Thrift Store, owned and operated by Banner Churchill Community Hospital Auxiliary, is open Tuesday-Saturday from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., 99 S. Nevada St., 775-423-6446. Donations are accepted Tuesday-Saturday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

American Legion

The American Legion at 90 N. Ada St., Friday night dinners are open to the public. A $5 donation is asked.

Breast cancer fundraiser

The American Legion Post 16 at 90 N. Ada St., will be raising money for breast cancer for the month of October. The post will be holding a coin drive, as well as having raffles for varies donated items. There will be additional specials going on for the whole month. Come and check us out.


FRA meetings

The Fleet Reserve Association is an active opponent of the Sea Services, Navy, Marine Corp and Coast Guard, active duty,retired or any who served a tour of duty. Join us or just check out a meeting at 7 p.m. on the fourth Thursday of each month at the American Legion Hall.


American Legion Ceremonial Team

Child support enforcement

Child support enforcement services are available through the Churchill County District Attorney’s office.

The staff may be able to help establish parentage and help obtain a child support order to include medical support. Pick up an application at the Churchill County Child Support Office at 165 N. Ada St., or visit www.churchillcounty.org and follow the links to the District Attorney’s Child Support Division.
