Americana music fans are in for a real treat when the nine-member ensemble, Dustbowl Revival, rolls into town for concert at the Art Center on September 13.
Based in Venice, Calif., the musical collective draws upon bluegrass, pre-World War II blues riffs, a touch of gospel and a healthy dose of New Orleans swing to bring new, and vibrant, life to decades of American music.
It’s a kind of string band brass band mash-up and their infectious, joyful music has entertained audiences at festivals across the country.
They were named “Best Live Band in L.A.” by the L.A. Weekly and Tom Waits gave them the Independent Music Award for Americana Song of the Year.
Over the years the group has become a mini-orchestra or sorts with an eclectic array of instruments including fiddle, mandolin, trumpet clarinet, drums, washboard, kazoo, trombone and even a tuba.
It’s a joyously upbeat musical experience and should be a good time for all. The band will also conduct a free and open to public conversation on their musical styles and influences at 3 p.m. in the center’s Art Bar. These popular informal talks are a great chance to get to know members of the band in an up close and personal setting.
Doors and no-host bar for the performance will open at 7 p.m. and the show will begin at 8 p.m. Tickets are $17 for CAC members, $20 for nonmembers and can be purchased at Jeff’s Copy Express on Maine Street, at ITT @ NAS Fallon or by calling the Churchill Arts Council at 775-423-1440.
The Dustbowl Revival show is also part of “Tractors & Truffles,” the city of Fallon’s farm to table food event. This daylong program includes lunch and a tour of Lattin Farms, a tour and tasting at Churchill Vineyards & Distillery, the free Art Bar Conversation with Dustbowl Revival, drinks and a gourmet dinner, capped off by the evening concert.
This year’s chefs for the dinner are Steve Hernandez of the Slanted Porch, Mark Davis from the Culinary School at the Art Institute of California, and Ryan Scott who made his debut on “Top Chef.” This year the gourmet meal will be served in the Lariat Courtyard of the Oats Park Art Center.
