Offense: The ground game wasn’t around much against the Lancers. Colby Brown had 66 yards, but Elijah Fajayan was held to less than three yards an attempt. Running is Carson’s bread and butter, and if the Senators can’t run it’s going to be hard to win a lot of games. The three TD passes, 56, 47 and 26 yards were not characteristic of Carson’s offense. Nolan Shine needs to make better decisions under center.
Defense: Carson did a tremendous job stopping the run EXCEPT when Jon Weethee burst up the middle for 68 yards and a score. It reminded me of the Reno game last year when Carson got gashed repeatedly. Carson yielded just four first downs in the second half and eight total. Carson’s defense had 14 stops for negative yardage and an impressive goal line stand in the fourth quarter. Shine needs to continue to play every snap on defense. The unit needs his energy.
Special teams: A vast improvement over last week. Save for the 95-yard kick return for a score the units had a solid performance. Johnny Barahona was 4-for-4 on PATs, Corey Reid’s punting was solid. Eddie Duarte’s kickoffs were well placed.
