Saying what Ivette Omos-Campos did to a 2-year-old child was “egregious and inexcusable,” District Judge Todd Russell on Monday gave her the maximum possible sentence for child abuse.
She was convicted of abuse causing substantial bodily harm for beating the two-year-old until he lost consciousness on more than one occasion and breaking his arm on another.
Assistant District Attorney Mark Krueger said she not only beat the little boy with a wooden back scratcher but refused to take him to the hospital because she knew she would get arrested for it. As a result of the beatings, the boy, Krueger said, has permanent damage including to his vision.
He also argued that the fact she was off of her mental health medication is no excuse for what she did.
“She was beating him and yelling ‘I hate you, I hate you’ at this little boy,” Krueger said.
The Parole and Probation Division recommended Omos-Campos get a sentence of 32-144 months in prison but Russell agreed with Krueger that wasn’t enough. He instead ordered Campos to serve a minimum of 96 months and up to 20 years in state prison.
