Local roundup: CVI hosts boxing card Saturday

Reigning National Collegiate Boxing Association champions Garrett Felling from the University of Nevada and Jacob Berggren of the Air Force Academy will be featured Saturday as part of a collegiate boxing exhibition card being hosted by members of the University of Nevada boxing alumni and coaches at the Carson Valley Inn.

The event will showcase boxers from the Air Force Academy, University of Nevada, University of Washington as well as three local club bouts starting at 4 p.m. in an outdoor arena at TJ’s Corral, located behind the CVI.

Mike Schellin of Carson City, one of the event’s coordinators and a University Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame inductee, noted the card amounts to a preseason exhibition for the college boxers.

“There should be some good fights,” said Schellin. “We have some experienced kids and we have some new guys who are just getting started, so this gives them a chance to get ready for their season. At the same time, we want to get people interested in (watching) college boxing.”

Felling won the NCBA 185-pound title for Nevada last spring, while Berggren captured the 139-pound title when he outpointed Nevada’s J.J. Mariano. All three are scheduled to appear in the ring Saturday.

CHS boys fall to Galena

RENO — The Grizzlies rolled to an easy win, handing the Senators their first loss of the season.

The bright spot for Carson was the play of Kyle Kunz and Aaron Woodbury, who picked up three of Carson’s points with a 7-6 (9-7), 6-0 and 6-1 wins. Jake Jones went 1-2 in singles and Trevor Sollberger and Jared Hearn went 1-2 at No. 2 doubles.

Carson girls dropped by Grizzlies

Despite three wins from Preeta Amin, the Senators dropped a 13-5 decision to Galena Thursday at home. Amin lost just eight games.

Shaylin Segura went 1-1 at No. 2 singles and Elise Brady won her only singles set, 7-5. Carson is now 2-2.

Carson finishes fifth

GENOA — Taylor Krupp shot a 93 to lead Carson to a fifth-place finish at the Sierra League Invitational Thursday at Genoa Lakes.

Manogue won with a 324 followed by Galena 378, Wooster 382, Douglas 415, Carson 420 and Damonte Ranch 479. Carson improved by 36 shots.

“This week the team showed what they are capable of scoring,” coach Rod Butler said. “Our Nos, 3, 5, and 6 players shot personal best scores and demonstrated the abilities we are seeing in practice.”

Bethany Kniffen shot 105, Camryn Aten 107, Angelika Ludwig 115, Juliet Favero 137 and Sara Dale 132 rounded out the Carson scoring.

FROSH FOOTBALL

Carson holds on

RENO — Abel Carter scored three times and Damian Wallace added two scores to lead Carson to a 37-23 win over North Valleys Thursday afternoon.

Carter, thanks to some outstanding blocking by Vince Hershman, Zach Schmidt, Noah Giron and Cody Stock, scored on runs of 10, 10 and 3 yards. Wallace had a 10-yard TD and a 60-yard TD catch from Daniel Morrison.

Truckee hammers Dayton boys

TRUCKEE — The Dust Devils fell to 0-3 after a 10-1 loss to perennial powerhouse Truckee Thursday night.

Victor Gomez scored in the 70th minute off an assist from Jorddy Diaz.

“They are a fast team,” Dayton coach Vismar Rivas said. “They are a good program.”

Dayton hosts Lowry Saturday at noon.

Dayton girls lose big

TRUCKEE —The Dust Devils played a strong first half before giving up 10 unanswered goals in the second half en route to a 13-1 loss on Thursday.

“We got in some of our younger players in the second half,” Dayton coach Jared Miklich said. “One of those new players was a goalie.”

Dayton hosts Lowry on Saturday at 10 a.m.
