Pinwheels for Prevention

Join FRIENDS Family Resource Center and Fallon Paiute-Shoshone Tribe for the planting of pinwheels at Millennium Park and an awareness walk to Fox Peak on April 25. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and the walk begins at 9 a.m. Free Child Abuse Prevention T-shirts will be given to the first 125 participants who register for the free walk.

Following the walk, participants and attendees are invited to join the Earth day celebration at Oats Park; there will be fun activities, food and informational booths.

Kindergarten registration

Kindergarten registration for the 2015-2016 school year will be held April 1-April 23 from 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. at Northside Early Learning Center, 340 Venturacci Lane.

Incoming students must turn 5 on or before September 30, 2015. Parents must provide current immunization records and state issued birth certificate. Registration packets may be picked up in advance during regular school hours.

Fernley Republican Women Scholarship

The Fernley Republican Women will offering a $1,000 college scholarship to a female accepted to or currently enrolled in an accredited school of higher education to be used toward education expenses.

The applicant, if over 18 years of age, must be a registered Republican; if she is under 18 years of age, her parent or legal guardian must be a registered Republican. She must reside in Fernley, Silver Springs or Wadsworth and meet certain other criteria listed on the application which can be downloaded from their website: fernleyrepublicanwomen.com.

Preference will be given to applicants/parents/guardians who are members of Republican clubs/organizations.

The application deadline is April 15.

Mother’s Day Extravaganza

The fourth annual Mother’s Day Extravaganza is May 6 from 5-8 p.m. at the Fallon Convention Center.

More than 40 vendors will be there, and free admission and door prize entries just for attending!! Plus, a drawing will be held for a lucky mom to win an amazing gift basket...so come nominate your mother!


Lyon County Republicans

The Lyon County Republican Central Committee (LCRCC) will hold its next meeting on April 11 at the Lyon County Building, 27 S. Main Street, Yerington.

The meeting begins at 10 a.m. The speaker will be Jeffery A. Page, Lyon County manager who will speak on Title 15. The public is invited to attend to hear his comments, learn more about grassroots politics and meet with Republican officials.

Purses with a Purpose

Churchill County Senior Center invites the public to come to its second annual Purses With A Purpose on April 11 from 8 a.m.- noon at 310 E. Court St.

On sale at the fundraiser will be new or slightly used purses, scarves and jewelry donated by the community for the event. For the first time attendees can also choose to enjoy breakfast for only $5 before or after they browse through the wide selection of merchandise.

Proceeds will benefit CCSC’s Meals On Wheels program.


CEDA breakfast

CEDA’s Business Council breakfast meeting is April 15 at 6:45 a.m. Guest speaker will be Adrienne Snow of Little Smudgeez.

The meeting will be held at the Fallon Convention Center.


AAUW film festival

The American Association of University Women’s annual film festival and dessert extravaganza is on April 25 at 6:30 p.m. at the Churchill County High School auditorium.

“The Hundred-Foot Journey” starring Helen Mirren and Om Puri is a scrumptious film about battling restaurant owners operating across the street from each other.

Movie historian Howard Rosenberg will discuss the film. The donation of $20 includes movie, drink and dessert buffet. Purchase tickets at Jeff’s, AAUW members or call Kathleen at 775-423-1814. All proceeds fund local scholarships.


Fernley Republican Women

The Fernley Republican Women (FRW) will hold its next meeting at the Fernley High School Library, 1300 Highway 95A, on April 21. A light meal will be served at 6:00 p.m. and the meeting will start at 6:30 p.m. The public is always invited to attend.

The scheduled speaker is Tim Dyhr, vice president-Environment & External Relations-Nevada Copper. He will bring FRW up to date on the progress made at the Pumpkin Hollow copper mine since the lands bill was passed on December 19.

Vendors needed

For the 15th year, Soroptimist International of Fallon presents the Home, Garden and Recreation Show on April 17-18 at the Fallon Convention Center.

Vendors are wanted for the spring event. Indoor and outdoor spaces are available. Proceeds from the Home, Garden and Recreation show will benefit the Domestic Violence Intervention, Students in Transition, and the local Soroptimist Scholarship Program. Soroptimist International is an organization for women donating their time and talents to doing what is best for women.

Amateur radio

The Amateur Radio of Churchill County (ARCC) invites all current amateur (Ham) radio operators or anyone interested in amateur radio to its monthly meeting, which is on the first Tuesday of the month at the Churchill County Administrative Complex, conference room 102, 155 N. Taylor St.

Amateur radio operators are invited to attend a weekly NET on Sundays at 6 p.m. at repeater 146.97 with a PL of 103.5 Hz to exchange information relating to general amateur radio topics.

Informal breakfast meeting and social on the third Sunday of every month at 8 a.m. at The Eagles Hall on the Reno Highway.

All current amateur (HAM) radio operators or anyone interested in getting their amateur (HAM) radio license come to our bi-monthly Volunteer Examination (Testing) Session, held on the third Saturday (March 21) of every other month.

Bagged clothing sales, $4 per plastic shopping bag full of clothing available on Saturdays.

The Churchill County High School Class of 1985 is having its 30-year reunion on Aug. 14-15. The committee is looking for “lost” classmates, and a list may be found on the LVN website and Facebook page.

MOPS meeting

Are you the Mother of a Preschooler, birth to 5 yrs.? Do you need a break a couple of times a month?

We hope at our meetings moms will find encouragement, support, relevant teaching, and opportunities to develop relationships with other women who are in the same stage of life. MOPS meets 10 a.m. to noon the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month at Parkside Bible Fellowship.

Child support enforcement

Child support enforcement services are available through the Churchill County District Attorney’s office.

The staff may be able to help establish parentage and help obtain a child support order to include medical support. Pick up an application at the Churchill County Child Support Office at 165 N. Ada St., or visit www.churchillcounty.org and follow the links to the District Attorney’s Child Support Division.
