Students in the Western Nevada College Deaf Studies program are on a mission. Not only are they learning sign language and studying deaf culture, they are preparing for a career in the field. Their goal: to assist those who need services, and bring enjoyment and confidence to the deaf community.
To share its vision, the college has designated this week as Deaf Pride Week on campus to celebrate, Deaf Studies students and faculty members are offering events for the community at the Carson City Campus, 2201 West College Parkway.
“It is a beautiful language and has an incredible culture that surrounds it,” said Kennadie Frias.
Classmate Nichole Bennett agreed.
“I fell in love with the language and culture,” Bennett agreed. “As a psychology major, I hope to open my own practice in which I can provide therapy for the deaf.”
Christa Babbitt said she learned 90 percent of deaf children are born to hearing parents, and 90 percent of them do not learn American Sign Language.
“There is a big need,” she said.
Headlining the week will be a free deaf fun day from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday. The event will feature a bounce house, photo booth, face painting, arts and crafts, food and raffles.
Other events include:
“Open hands night” from 6-9 p.m. Friday at the Carson Nugget Community Hall, WNC Carson City Campus, Aspen Building. Deaf community members, interpreters, faculty and deaf studies students will perform music interpretations and story telling. Tickets are $10 and seating is limited.
An “Interpreting Workshop” will take place from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday. The workshop is for classroom teachers. Taught by Shannon Archer, EIPA certified interpreter and adjunct faculty member.
