Nevada Legislature: Lawmakers review constitutional right to hunt, trap and fish

Nevada lawmakers are reviewing a potential constitutional amendment to hunt, fish and trap.

Republican Sen. Scott Hammond presented SJR 11 to the Assembly Natural Resources Committee on Thursday. The measure passed out of the Senate earlier in April on a 16-5 vote.

Hammond said the measure would protect access to outdoor activities like hunting and fishing and noted that 17 other states have approved similar constitutional amendments.

The resolution would need to pass two legislative sessions and statewide vote to become law.

Committee members said they were concerned that the measure could make it difficult to charge for licenses and to set limits on hunting or fishing tags.

Hammond said the proposed amendment wouldn’t affect current law and that other states haven’t run into issues with similar constitutional protections.
