Rider dies during Virginia City Grand Prix

A man died in a crash during the Virginia City Grand Prix motorcycle race Saturday, the Storey County Sheriff’s Office reported.

Robin R. Schmidt, 59, of Livermore, Calif., was pronounced dead just before 3 p.m.

Storey County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the area of the 400 block of P Street in Virginia City, responding to a report of an injured rider during the Virginia City Grand Prix, held on a single track, 25-30 mile course in and around Virginia City. Deputies responded with Story County firefighter/paramedics and found Schmidt unconscious and not breathing.

Course officials, who witnessed the crash, indicated Schmidt drove his motorcycle off an earthen embankment and became separated from his motorcycle.

Emergency personnel attempted resuscitation efforts that were unsuccessful. The cause of the accident continues to be under investigation.
