Heck, Skabelund pick up wins

In yet another solid effort, the boys track team’s reward was a third-place finish at the Big George Invitational at Douglas High School.

Saturday’s meet saw Nathan Heck, Charles Fulks and T.J. Mauga all win or take second in their respective events.

Fallon scored 87.5 points behind Elko (95) and Douglas (91). The Lady Wave, meanwhile, took seventh with 43.5 behind meet champ Douglas (111.5), Spring Creek (98), Galena (85), Bishop Manogue (75), Elko (59) and Dayton (45.5).

As has become almost tradition, Heck won the pole vault with a height of 14 feet, 6 inches, and took second in the long jump (21-1.5). He also placed fifth in the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 17.25 seconds.

Fulks, meanwhile, added a pair of second-place finishes in the 200 (23.39) and 400 (51.69). Mauga, though, was not outdone as the sophomore grabbed another second-place mark in the discus at 159-8 and followed with a sixth-place effort in the shot put (43 feet).

Jake Ernst took third in the 100 (11.71) and fourth in the triple jump (41), while Tristen Thomson was third in the 800 (2:05.11)

For the Lady Wave Whitney Skabelund had her best overall meet with several dominating performances.

Sge won the long jump (16-1.75) with a season-best mark, was second in the triple jump (33-3.5) and took fourth in 300 hurdles (49.8).

Brynlee Shults followed Skakeblund in the triple jump with a third-place finish at 32-2.25, while Sierra Hickox took fifth (31-2.5).

Chloe Overlie was seventh in 3,200 (13:21) and Melaine Nuckolls placed eighth (13:31).

Golfers fifth at Lowry tourney

Barring an epic collapse, the Fallon boys golf team is looking from the outside in its chase to the Division I-A state tournament.

Fallon carded a 455 to fifth last week in Winnemucca and is now tied with Lowry for fourth place in the league standings at 34 points. Spring Creek won the tournament with a 412 followed by Elko (419), Lowry (434) and Truckee (453).

As for the league standings, Elko sits in first with 51 points followed by Spring Creek (48) and Truckee (43).

Despite the long odds for Fallon to qualify as a team, a trio of Greenwave players are currently in line to make the state cut.

Raymond Plasse, Corbin Waite and Kelvin Cann hold three of the six berths for players from non-qualifying teams.

Cann has been red-hot the past four tournaments as he scored a season-low 84 in Winnemucca. His past four tournaments have all been 89 or lower and holds a three-stroke lead over teammate Jeff Evett for the No. 6 spot.

Cann tallied the best score at Winnemucca, while Plasses carded a 92, Waite shot a 94, Evett a 93, Nick Smith hit 92 and Mike Richards II came in with a 98.
