Darrell Moody: Jets are a mess; Blueberg is going strong

Can you believe the mess with the New York Jets?

Your quarterback gets punched in the face by a linebacker over a $600 plane ticket that apparently wasn’t used. So, Geno Smith is out for half the season, and the team goes with journeyman Ryan Fitzpatrick under center.

Not a great way for new head coach Todd Bowles to start.

What I couldn’t believe is new Bills coach, Rex Ryan, picked up linebacker Ikemefuna Enemkpali from the waiver wire. Does Ryan think the league won’t come down hard on his newest player for his attack on Smith?

What is Rex smoking in Buffalo these days?

The Bills are going to find out quickly Ryan isn’t the answer unless he can somehow develop a front-line quarterback. If that doesn’t happen soon, the Bills are never going to be a playoff team.

JaVale McGee, the former University of Nevada center under Mark Fox, has been signed by the Dallas Mavericks.

McGee has never realized his potential during his NBA career. He’s one guy who should have stayed in school. You can get by not playing mch defense at the college level, but when all you can do is block shots, you aren’t going to stop many people in the NBA.

One of my most vivid memories of McGee is when he got in the passing lane and picked off a pass. It seemed like he only took 4 or 5 steps when he took off from the opposing free-throw line and dunked the ball.

I never thought McGee rebounded as well as a 7-footer should. Nick Fazekas didn’t play great defense, but he was one of the best defensive rebounders around.

I’d like to see McGee have some success, but I feel that way about all former Nevada players.

The best player to date, in terms of longevity, has been point guard Ramon Sessions.

Tom Eck, the new Dayton football coach, isn’t the only new coaching face this year.

After a one-year hiatus, Monica Halverson has returned as Dayton High’s volleyball coach.

Halverson, who guided the Madison Foly-led Dust Devils to the state tournament two years ago, said she’ll put a “scrappy” team on the floor this season.

Another change out at Dayton is Luis Melgarejo taking over the boys soccer program.
