A Lyon County deputy raised more than $11,000 for the family of the fallen Carson City Deputy Carl Howell.

Nick Greenhut, who works in the Lyon County Detention Facility raised $11,250 in six days through GoFundMe after Deputy Howell was shot and killed last Saturday.

“I cannot thank you enough for your support, I’m sure deputy Howell is smiling down on us and is grateful his community is taking good care of his family,” Greenhut wrote on the GoFundMe page. “It seems like recently there has been so much negative news in the media regarding law enforcement and it means the world to us to see so much love and support from our community.”

All of the proceeds will go to an account for Deputy Howell’s family via the Carson City Sheriff’s Office. Greenhut has closed the page, but encourages anyone else who wishes to donate to seek out one of the other donation sites for Deputy Howell.

More than 170 people donated to Greenhut’s site, with donations ranging from $5 to $500.

The Carson City Deputy Sheriff’s Association has also set up a donation account at the Heritage Bank of Nevada, called the Carl Howell Memorial Fund, account number 2000012522.

Deputy Howell was killed in the line of duty Aug. 15 after responding to reports of a domestic dispute. He was fatally wounded after a gunfight, which resulted in the suspect dying as well. Howell’s funeral was last Thursday.
