Community sports: Cabela’s has events planned through Sept. 7

RENO — Cabela’s has announced plans to celebrate its annual Fall Great Outdoor Days event with sales, guest appearances, seminars, family activities, sponsor exhibits and demonstrations through Monday, Sept. 7.

This weekend’s activities (Saturday and Sunday) include archery at Cabela’s inflatable archery range in front of the store from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., kayak 101 at 11 a.m., fly tying demonstrations and instruction from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. both days by the Truckee River Fly Fishers, a wildlife identification and craft activity with Susan Sawyer of the Stillwater Wildlife Refuge at the African Diorama at 2 p.m. both days and free life jacket fittings all day both days by Fred Messmann with the National Safe Boating Council.

Silsby wins title

at Silver Oak

Jim Silsby shot rounds of 73 and 75 to win the club championship at Silver Oak.

Alex Talmant and Lew Dodgion tied for the low net titlke in Flight 1. Both were at 130. Silsby finished third low net, while Vern Payette was fourth at 139. Eric Fujita, George Cole, Tim Bloom and Tim Ricketts tied for fifth at 141 (net).

James Feeney was the low gross winner with a 182 for Flight 2. Martin Johnson (133) edged Joe Paden (135) by two shots to win the Flight 2 low net title. Feeney was third, while John Scoville was fourth with a 141. Eric Moorman and Pat Lantis tied fifth at 142.

• Bert Wells and Bill Whitstone were the flight winners at Silver Oak men’s Club White-Blue-Black tournament.

Wells won Flight 1 with a 67, a stroke better than Charles Spencer, Milo Beauchman and Jim Silsby.

Whitstone won Flight 2 with a 63, four shots better than Clark Balik and six better than Jeff Cloutier.

• Mary Luster and Terri Paden tied for first in Flight 1 at the Silver Oak Jeri’s Best event. Both had a score of 23.5. Annette Ramirez was third at 26.0.

Betty Messier won Flight 2 with a 23.5, Marty Lewis was second at 24.5 and Loretta Szymanski was third at 25.5.

Eagle Valley hosts

benefit tourney

The VFW Post 8660 is holding a benefit golf tournament Saturday at Eagle Valley.

The cost is $90 for the four-man scramble event. The event gets under way at 9 a.m.

Menezes wins flight

at Carson Valley

Marc Menezes shot a net 64 to win Flight A at the recent Carson Valley Golf Club Senior Men’s Club event.

Menezes won by four shots over Charley Serafine and Dan Essary.

Matt Lindsey won Flight B with a 67, two shots better than Roger Hala and Fred Coons. Jim Arens won Flight C with a 66, 10 shots better than Jack Zippwald and Gary Schreiber. Robert Van Nort won Flight D with a 62, 12 shots better than Jim Tavernier.

• Carson Valley Golf Club pro Rob Harbottle is hosting junior golf clinics starting Sept. 14.

The classes are held Tuesdays or Fridays from 4 .m. to 5 p.m., and juniors are based on age and experience. The program lasts for six weeks.

Tierney leads way

at Empire Ranch

John Tierney shot a net 63 to win Flight A on the first day of the Empire Ranch Senior Men’s Club championship.

Bob Pemberton and Don Swanson are at 66 and 68, respectively.

Tom Teders leads Flight B with a 63, one shot ahead of Rich Torok and Tom Sawyer. Bob Pitccock leads Flight C with a 59, two shots better than Donnie Curd and four ahead of Ray McPartlin. Maurice Dias leads Flight D with a 62 followed by Joe O’Brien, also at 62, and Greg Bentley at 63.
