The Carson City Jail is getting a face lift.
The 17-year-old facility is getting retrofitted with a new $200,000 control system, that’s going to improve the locking mechanisms and other systems within the jail. This remodel is coming because of difficulties with finding replacement parts for the systems, said Sheriff Ken Furlong. Many of the pieces the maintenance staff need to replace or repair in the jail are too old and aren’t made anymore by the manufacturer.
“This is an exciting point for us because it has been a long awaited and necessary upgrade for the jail,” Furlong said.
Furlong said this is a labor intensive operation that could last up to two weeks to complete. But when it’s finished the new system is going to all be updated to a touch screen system. Plans for this new system have been in place for several years, but it wasn’t until the past year the department got approval for an infrastructure upgrade because of the age of the building. This infrastructure upgrade is being done on both the jail and the juvenile probation detention center.
Until the system is completely set up, the jail staff is going to have to lock and unlock the jail doors manually and the jail staff are going to have extra security with overtime and reserve deputies. Normal visitation appointments will not be canceled.
