Don’t call it the Sports Illustrated cover curse, but it’s time to start pumping up the Greenwave this winter.

All three – boys and girls basketball and wrestling – are having a strong preseason after the football team closed out the fall campaign for the school in high fashion. In case you’ve missed it, here’s what’s been going on in the Lahontan Valley.

The Lady Wave basketball team is undefeated.

All wins have been by double-digits. Two of the seven wins have come against Division I schools (McQueen and Douglas). One of the other seven wins was a blowout against of the most consistently strong teams in the league (Lowry).

This year’s squad isn’t a fluke as Fallon has had near misses in the last couple of seasons. Fallon resumes league play next week against Fernley after blowing out Dayton and Lowry to open Division I-A competition.

Fallon will get another challenge at the end of the month in a Reno tournament that features competition from the local area, including schools from Divisions I, I-A and III.

While its counterpart isn’t undefeated, the boys’ basketball team three of four losses have been decided by fewer than 10 points.

Fallon lost a nail-biter to Lowry (48-46) but buried Dayton by 24 this week to get even in league. The Greenwave, though, suffered a seven-point loss to Pershing County as they get back into league competition next week with Fernley.

Fallon will compete in its second and final tournament at the end of the month before playing against Division I-A foes.

The Greenwave wrestling team returned from Las Vegas with a third-place finish in a tournament and brought home five medals.

Fallon has been riding on its limited experience and leadership from last year’s club, but it has gained more as the season’s progressed with several wrestlers stepping up. The Greenwave also was strong earlier this month in the Earl Wilkens/Stockman’s Invitational, losing only to Carson, which won the tournament.

Fallon has the talent to compete in the division since Lowry has been the team to beat, but it’s been depth that has troubled the program since the Division I days.

Fallon’s next stop is the Reno Tournament of Champions, dubbed as one of the toughest tournaments in the West.

The Greenwave sports winter season is just getting started as the Lady Wave basketball team is leading the charge with its undefeated record setting the pace. The boys also have the talent to make a run in the division as both the boys and girls could be playing in the state tournament in two months at Lawlor Events Center. The wrestling team will no doubt represent Fallon in the state meet, but the big question will be how deep of a run can the Wave make.

Prepare for some exciting hoops and wrestling to take over the town this winter.
