RENO — Brandon Basa, Brady O’Keefe and Sheldon Miller reached the quarterfinals of the prestigious Sierra Nevada Classic Tuesday at the Reno Livestock and Events Center.

Today’s action gets under way at 9 a.m.

Basa (113) won all three matches via pin, while O’Keefe (145) started with an 11-3 decision and then collected two straight pins. Miller, wrestling heavyweight, won two matches by pin and beat Lowry’s Chris Karchola, 7-1.

“The undefeated kids are wrestling solid, scoring first and wrestling within themselves,” CHS coach Justin Shine said.

Also moving on are a pair of football standouts, Kevin Rusler (182) and Connor Sievers (191). All four of Sievers’ wins were by pin while Rusler, who had a first-round bye, had two decisions and a pin. Rusler avenged an earlier loss to North Valleys’ Zach Martin to advance on an injury default, while Sievers knocked off Austin Lemons from Reno to advance.

“It was fun to watch Kevin grow,” Shine said. “Sievers also wrestled tough. He came out with a bear hug in the first round against Lemons. The boys came out focused and with the right game plan.”

Not to be overlooked were efforts by Abel Carter (170) and Corey Jasper (220). Both wrestled five matches, earning valuable points as they fought their way back through consolation. Isaiah Prater was a non-scoring 3-2, being the second CHS wrestler in a weight class. Terin Keller (106) posted a 2-2 record. Ethan Lepire (113) was a nonscoring 3-2.

“They all showed a lot of grit all day,” Shine said. “It is really tough to wrestle back in the consolation bracket at a tournament like this. They all had tough elimination matches at the end where they came up just short.”

Carson sits in 13th place with 82 points. Servite-Anaheim leads at 113.5 followed by Folsom at 109, Del Orio 101.5, Spring Creek 96.5, Cleveland-New Mexico 93.5, Marshfield-Oregon 93.0, Vista Murrieta-California 89.5, Sprague-Oregon 88.5, Tahoma 88.0, Spanish Springs 87.5, Oakdale-California 87.0, Redmond 83.0 and CHS.
