Lake Tahoe Brewing Company hosts grand opening Wednesday in Carson City

A grand opening event is set Wednesday afternoon for Lake Tahoe Brewing Co., a new drinking and food establishment in downtown Carson City.

The company, which has another location in Truckee, Calif., will host the official opening replete with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 5:30 p.m. in the refurbished Carson City micro-brewery spot at 302 N. Carson St. The same building formerly housed High Sierra Brewery, a firm that now operates at a casino in Sparks.

The Lake Tahoe Brewing Co. ribbon-cutting ceremony, put on by Carson City’s Chamber of Commerce, will coincide with a special happy hour slated for 5 p.m. The formal opening comes after a series of soft openings for friends and family and then last weekend to the general public. The target for the opening was to be ready when the Legislature hit town Monday, but the weekend soft opening also included the Super Bowl football bash.

“This is the perfect timing right after the Super Bowl,” said Ronni Hannaman, chamber executive director. “I think there’s a lot of pent-up demand because of all the beer ads from the Super Bowl.”

After that lighter side comment, Hannaman also looked forward to longer term opportunities for the establishment and community. She said in a rejuvenating downtown it provides “another venue in the city for us to go to after work.”

The brewery/restaurant is opening under the leadership of Mike Candelario and his spouse, who are among a group owning and operating the two Lake Tahoe outlets here and in Truckee. Candelario, who is in his early 30s, said he learned about brewing in Europe and in the Midwest before coming to this area., He plans to pair his beer offerings with pizzas and other Italian inspired food fare.

The brewery and eatery is located just north across Proctor Street from the Adams Hub, a business incubator, and a block to the east of the former Citibank building, which is on property along Curry Street from Proctor north to Telegraph Street.

The brewery building and the Hub are structures owned by the property-holding arm of the Hop and Mae Adams Foundation. The former Citibank building, also owned by that firm, has been gutted and is also to be renovated like the Hub and the brewery building. The new brewing company and restaurant is managed by Morgan Davis for Candelario.
