MINDEN — The Douglas girls basketball team (11-2 league, 19-4) cruised past Galena 34-25 on Tuesday to clinch a top-two finish in the Sierra League and homecourt advantage for the first-round of the playoffs.
The Tigers led 11-6 after one quarter and 20-10 at halftime against Galena (5-8, 8-12). The Grizzlies are now two games behind Carson in the race for third place.
Douglas has now won four straight games and 11 of its last 12 — allowing an average of 33.6 points per game during that stretch.
First place in the Sierra League will be at stake Friday when the Tigers play at Bishop Manogue.
Strong start, slow finish for Devils
DAYTON — A 22-6 second-quarter surge by the Vikings carried them to a 57-35 win over Dayton.
South Tahoe led 28-16 at the half and outscored Dayton 29-19 in the final two periods.
“We are a strong team but we didn’t do well fundamentally on defense tonight,” coach Kelly Frantz said.
“We got caught standing and we had too many fouls called tonight from reaching behind the shooter instead of moving our feet to keep the pressure on our man. We ran the ball pretty well and got some great shots off, but if we don’t stop the other team from shooting or keep sending them to the free throw line, we are playing from behind and that’s not where we want to be.”
Angela Sikora had 16 points, 12 rebounds and two blocks. Christi Ricci and Elvia Diaz both had five points.
Sierra Lutheran falls
SMITH — Cali Benton had seven points and grabbed 12 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough for Sierra Lutheran in its 47-23 loss to Smith Valley.

Galena rolls past Douglas
MINDEN — Galena used a 15-4 run through the second quarter Tuesday night at home to take charge in its Sierra League contest against Douglas, 54-35.
By winning, Galena (10-3 league, 18-6 overall) set up a showdown for first-place Friday at Carson.
Douglas (7-6 league, 9-14 overall) led 7-6 after one quarter, only to see the Grizzlies rally back to take a 21-11 halftime advantage and 36-22 at the end of three quarters.
Connor Lyons scored 12 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, to lead Douglas offensively. Trey Maurer also scored five points to go with a team-high seven rebounds, three assists and three steals for the Tigers, who retained their hold on fourth-place in the league standings.
Vikings stop Dayton
DAYTON — Blake Blocker scored 16 points, but it wasn’t enough as South Tahoe rolled to a 64-41 Division 1A victory over Dayton Tuesday night.
The loss dropped Dayton to 2-11 in league heading into Friday’s game at Fallon.
“I thought we played well defensively,” Dayton coach Jason Santos said. “We were flying around out there. We just don’t have the kids that can score. South Tahoe got a lot of second-chance points tonight.”
Ty Pearson added eight points for the Dust Devils.
JV GIRLS BASKETBALL
Carson beats Wooster
Josie Share went 7-of-12 from the foul line on her way to scoring 17 points, Molly Otto scored nine points, Mallory Otto had eight points and Sophia Ruedy added five points for Carson (18-3, 12-1) in its 46-33 win over Wooster.
Sierra Lutheran nips S. Valley
SMITH — Claire Cochran scored six points to help Sierra Lutheran improve to 7-0 in league play with a 21-19 win Tuesday night.
Brynna Hansen and Aleyna Gilson added four points each.

Lauren Lemburg scored 13 points, Blanca Sosa had 10 points, Dajarrah Navarro and Jasmine Peralt each had six points, Meghan Olsen had four points, Abbey Paulson had two points and Amanda Schulz added two points for Carson in its 44-22 win over Wooster.

RENO— Greg Wallace scored 18 points, Michael Mendoza had 10 points and Taylor Saarem added seven points for Carson in its 52-50 win over Wooster.
