LAS VEGAS — An overnight storm in the Las Vegas area brought rain and enough snow on the western flank of the valley for people to make snowmen.
About 1.5 inches of snow fell in Summerlin, located west of Las Vegas, said National Weather Service meteorologist Clay Morgan. Snow started falling in Summerlin about 1 a.m. Monday and lasted a few hours.
The falling snowflakes created quite the buzz Monday in a valley that doesn’t get snow very often. People posted pictures on social media and shared stories of how they enjoyed or were surprised by the snow.
Tracey Bruggeman of Summerlin said she’s loving the snowfall, but is disappointed it came on a work day.
“Otherwise I would be making snowmen and playing in it,” Bruggeman said by email Monday.
Bruggeman, who is from Ohio, said she has seen desert drivers, who are unaccustomed to snowfall, skidding all over the roadway.
LaChelle Ann, a recent Chicago transplant who now lives in Summerlin, said she had been hoping to miss the snow this year.
“We moved to Vegas (in August) and we were like, ‘Cool we’ll never have to deal with snow again,’” she said. “I woke up this morning and I was like, ‘Is this a joke?’”
She said there was about an inch of snow outside.
“My dog has never seen the snow, never touched the snow and wouldn’t even go outside,” she said.
The Las Vegas Valley gets snow about once every 1-2 years, Morgan said.
About 10-12 inches of snow fell at the Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard Resort on Mount Charleston, Morgan said. About ½ inch of rain fell in the rest of the Las Vegas Valley.
The forecast calls for warmer temperatures on Tuesday.
