Book signing to benefit Carson City library

Reno author Mark S. Bacon will discuss mystery books and mystery writers and sign copies of his new book titled “Death in Nostalgia City” from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Browser’s Corner.

“Death in Nostalgia City” is the story of Lyle Deming, an anxiety-ridden ex-cop who wears a rubber band on his wrist for stress control and would rather do anything other than police work. But when he takes a job driving a cab at the retro theme park, he winds up investigating sabotage and murder.

The novel is partly inspired by Northern Nevada’s Hot August Nights. It takes place in a theme park resort that’s a meticulous recreation of a small town as it would have appeared in the late 1960s or early 1970s.

Half of the profits made at the book signing event — which will highlight Bacon’s thoughts on the origin of the mystery novel, where crime novelists get their inspiration and how technical details are important to a story — go to Friends of the Carson City Library.

Bacon is a former police reporter and advertising copywriter. He’s the author of six other books including two collections of mystery flash fiction stories titled “Cops, Crooks & Other Stories in 100 Words” and “Mysteries and Murder.” He was a correspondent for the San Francisco Chronicle and professor of journalism at University of Nevada, Reno.

Founded in 1965, the Friends of the Carson City Library is a member-supported non-profit organization. Funds raised by the group are used to supply books, periodicals and equipment for the library when the purchases would not be available through the budgeting process.
