Cleo Pulsipher, who helped start the Carson Bulldogs wrestling program and also coached several sports at Carson High, and former 1975 state champion Bobby Greiner are going to be inducted into the Carson High Wrestling Hall of Fame on Saturday night.
The two will be the main guests at the annual HOF dinner which goes from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Carson Nugget Ballroom.
Pulsipher, who taught for 30 years, said he found out a couple of weeks ago from coach Paul Carter.
“It’s an honor,” he said in a phone conversation Thursday. “For me, it brings back a lot of memories.”
He coached track, football and basketball at Carson. He was named the head football coach at Carson in 1966, but resigned in 1970. He was named the school’s athletic director in 1974.
His good friend, the late Bing Blood, convinced him to start a wrestling program at the high school.
“I didn’t know anything about it,” Pulsipher said. “I went to the principal (and school board) and got permission to start the program.
“The team got really good, and we had our first state champ in 1972.”
Carson has won 19 league wrestling titles, including five straight. That streak will be in jeopardy after a season-opening loss to Damonte Ranch.
Pulsipher ran a couple of state tournaments for former NIAA boss Bert Cooper. In 1982, he was named to the National Federation Wrestling Rules Committee. He retired from the school district in 1990.
Greiner was unavailable for comment. He won his state title as a 165-pounder.
