Nevada’s legal community is marking the start of the state Court of Appeals with a formal investiture for judges Abbi Silver, Jerome Tao and Michael Patrick Gibbons.
The ceremony held Monday at the Carson City Community Center comes a week after the judges took the oath of office and began work.
Gibbons is from Douglas County. He’s been named chief appeals court judge. He’ll chair proceedings and speak publicly for the panel.
Tao and Silver are from Clark County.
Voters on Nov. 4 approved establishing the three-judge intermediate court to hear civil and criminal cases assigned to it by the seven-member state high court.
The idea is to relieve pressure on the Supreme Court, which renders about 2,300 rulings a year but carries a backlog of more than 2,100 cases.
