New law puts teeth into stop sign ordinance

Motorists in Carson City will soon be required under the law to come to a complete stop at all streets where stop signs have been placed.

City trustees passed an ordinance Friday night to make it mandatory to stop at all of the signed streets, or on streets where traffic lights may be installed.

Although stop signs have been placed on various streets through Carson for sometime, with the exception of Carson St., there was no ordinance under which a motorist could be punished for not stopping.

Under the new ordinance, a motorists who does not come to a complete stop at all streets signed for stops can be fined from $2 to $50 or be jailed from 1 to 25 days.

Fire apparatus going to a fire, provided it has flashing red lights on and sounds a siren, does not have to observe the stop signs.

However, it was pointed out by trustees that this exception does not apply to firemen going to the station in their private cars in answer to a fire call.
