Community spotlight: Successful summer for WildCats’ 18-u softball squad

The Nevada WildCats 18-u softball squad concluded its summer season by finishing second at last weekend’s ASA tournament at Incline Village.

The WildCats went 4-1-1, losing 7-0 to Grants Pass in the championship game. For the summer, the WildCats were 15-5-2 with one championship and two-second-place finishes in five tournaments.

On Saturday, the WildCats tied the Roseville Thunder, 3-3, beat Victory Fastpich, 7-5 and knocked off the Nevada Comets 14-5. On Sunday, Nevada stopped C-4 10-2, beat the Thunder 6-3 and lost in the finals.

Bailey Henderson went 10-for-19, while Kati Gonzales was 6-for-13 with a homer. Kelsie Callahan went 7-for-16 with a homer and Kayla Buckmaster went 5-for-15 with a homer. Bailey Barcellos finished 5-for-16, Taylor Caulk went 7-for-18 and Britini Greninger went 4-for-13.

Kaitlyn Jimmy won two games in the circle as did Buckmaster.

Kiwanis golf event

set for Sept. 19

The second annual Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Golf Tournament is Sept. 19 at Empire Ranch.

The cost is $75, and there are six divisions. The senior division is open to golfers 55 and over.

There is a long drive in each division and closest to the hole. There will be putting tape and mulligans for sale.

McPartlin group wins

Empire senior event

The team of Ray McPartlin, Mark Wilson, Mike Logue and Mike Rogers shot a 45 to win Flight A at the Empire Ranch Sr. Men’s Club event at Dayton Valley on July 15.

Bill Hetherton, Dale Guy, Rod Corbit and Tim Morsani were second with a 47. Carl Slate, Bob Pitcock, Fred Blackburn and Bill Hammons were third at 48.

John Masiello, Nick Paul, Jim Green and John Lewis won Flight B with a 46. The quartet of Donie Curd, Don Wilson, Greg Bentley and Al Giannotti were second with a 46. Bill Milligan, Ivan Lepire, Maurice Dias and Jack Mederios were third at 47.

Girls hoop clinic set for UNR

RENO – The Nevada women’s basketball program will host its final summer camp of 2015 with an overnight camp from Aug. 1-4. The camp will feature the Nevada coaching staff, along with new additions Tahnee Robinson and Kassidy Hardgrove.

An additional new feature for this particular camp is sessions being held at both Virginia Street Gym and Lawlor Events Center. The overnight camp is available to girls entering grades 4-12. Participants can choose a dorm option for $390, plus a $50 security deposit, or a commuter option for $290.

Robinson is no stranger to the Nevada women’s basketball program. In just two seasons with the Wolf Pack, she posted an impressive résumé of honors, averaging 19.5 points per game en route to becoming one of Nevada’s 12 1,000 point scorers. Her play on the court led the Pack to back-to-back appearances in the WNIT and to its first 20-win season in 2010-11.

For the past few summers, Hardgrove has worked at Point Guard College (PGC) as a basketball site coordinator and skill development instructor at multiple colleges and universities across the country.

Volunteers needed for

PGA event in Reno

RENO — The 17th Annual Barracuda Championship is almost here, and golf fans still have the opportunity to get up close and personal as volunteers for the region’s only PGA Tour event. To register, visit www.BarracudaChampionship.com or call 775-322-3900. “The Barracuda Championship continues to be a success year after year thanks in a large part to our volunteers,” said tournament director Chris Hoff. “And even though the work they help us do during the tournament is crucial, its benefit is seen year-round as we’re able to support so many other charities in the Reno-Tahoe community. Not to mention, it’s an amazing opportunity to get up close to some of the best players in the game.”

With the tournament only two weeks away, volunteer opportunities are filling up fast, but there is still a need for laser operators and marshals.

The $55 fee includes the required uniform with exclusive branded material, a meal during each shift, tournament tickets and invitations to the Volunteer Appreciation Parties, valued at more than $200. As always, military veterans, active duty, guard and reserve, first responders and high school students can volunteer at no cost.

Christenson wins Alta Apina bike race

David Christenson placed first at Alta Alpina’s weekly race. Josh Rennie and Robert Braun finished second and third, respectively. In B group, Adrian Tieslau, Michael Bayer, Andrew Huntington and Rick Miyashiro went 1 through 4. Jennie Hamiter won C group followed by John Cotter and Deana Davis won D group followed by Scott Shick.

Menezes group wins

Marc Menezes, Brick Ludington, Neil Bain and John Guidicatti combined for a 124 to win the Carson Valley Golf Club’s cha-cha-cha event on July 19.

Glen Watson, Augie Martinez, Bruce Sanford and Joe Bourgeois were second at 130 and Dan Essary, Frank Tisiot, Chuck Householder and Gene Swella were third at 133.
