A multi-car accident blocked off parts of Highway 50 Thursday afternoon in Carson City.

Four cars were involved in the primary accident, with two cars involved in a secondary accident on Highway 50 between Lompa Lane and Airport Road. The first accident occurred around 3:05 p.m. when a red Chevy Aveo, traveling west down the middle lane rear-ended a gray Civic, authorities said. The Civic then rear-ended a blue Pontiac in front of it and the Chevy bounced off and hit a white Expedition that was traveling to the left of it and the Chevy flipped onto its side, authorities said. A passenger from the Chevy was transported to the hospital, and authorities said they believed the patient may be Care Flighted to Renown Medical Center in Reno.

The second accident occurred east of the original accident as one woman attempted to turn around to avoid the accident and side swiped another car, authorities said.

Traffic was diverted at Airport Road while crews investigated and cleared the scene.

Nevada Highway Patrol still is investigating the cause of the accident and couldn’t say whether drugs or alcohol were involved. The accident closed down the road for about an hour.
